Sloan Master's Program

Courses

Students raise handsTo earn the Master of Science in Management degree, Stanford Sloan fellows must complete a series of core courses designed specifically for the program.

During winter and spring quarters, Fellows may select electives from approximately 100 elective courses offered each year. A typical quarter-long, four-unit course will have two classes per week, each 90 minutes long, over 10 weeks. Some courses may be offered once per week in a three-hour block. You will spend about 20 hours per week in class and generally need one to two hours of outside preparation for each hour in class.

The Academic Year

The academic year is divided into three quarters plus a pre-term orientation program in the fall that includes three short courses. Sloan Fellows also take part in study trips during quarter breaks and an international field trip in June and July.

Project (GSB 390)

"The bottom line: the GSB390 project gives a Sloan the opportunity to really analyze what we have learned, to answer a question or address an issue, and then codify the results in a way he/she believes will be important for the future. A very valuable and rewarding activity."

— Dr. Bob Pugh, Sloan '02

Participants interested in a specific independent research topic may substitute a project for one elective course. To do this, the Sloan Fellow works with a faculty member whose expertise and interests match the project. The Sloan Program director can advise Fellows on project proposals. A project can be equivalent to one to four credit units depending on its scope.
