Sloan Master's Program

Grades

"I expected to work hard and be challenged by top faculty. What I didn't expect was how much I would learn from my classmates."

— A recent Sloan alumnus

To be awarded the Master of Science in Management degree, Sloan participants must be graded for their coursework and must maintain satisfactory class standing. Grades are assigned on both class participation and written work. Although Sloan Fellows receive a final grade in each course, grades are not posted at the Business School and academic performance is completely confidential. Information on grades will not be transmitted to any sponsoring organization without authorization from the Sloan Fellow.

To get the most from the program, Sloan Fellows are encouraged to experiment and take intellectual risks when selecting courses rather than rely on familiar subjects to earn higher grades. Sponsors are encouraged not to focus on specific grades but rather on the overall knowledge gained.

Assessing Grades

Each faculty member decides grades based on his or her own assessment methods. They may include:

  • Class participation
  • Assignments for class discussion and/or work handed in
  • Mid-term examinations
  • Final examinations
  • Term projects

The Business School's Grading System

H: An honors performance, typically received by 10 percent of the students in a course.

HP: A high pass performance. The percentage of students receiving H and HP combined typically will be no more than 35 percent total.

P: An average passing performance. The percentage of students receiving P, HP, and H combined typically will be no more than 75 percent.

LP: A passing performance, but one at the low end of the distribution of passing grades.

U: A failing or unsatisfactory performance. The student does not receive credit for the course.

I: Incomplete. Given only if a substantial part of the course work is completed with satisfactory grades and with valid grounds for not completing required work.
