Today John Browne serves as group chief executive of one of the world's largest energy companies, BP Amoco, p.l.c. formed in December, 1998 after the merger of the two firms. Prior to the merger he served as managing director of British Petroleum and was named Managing director and chief executive officer of BP Exploration in 1989.
He is a non-executive director of the Intel Corporation and Goldman Sachs, a trustee of The British Museum, a member of the Governing Body of the London Business School and a member of the Supervisory Board of DaimlerChrysler AG. He is also emeritus chairman of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, a trustee of the Conference Board, Inc. and a vice president and member of the board of the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum.
Lord Browne holds a degree from Cambridge University and an MS in Business from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
He was knighted in the 1998 Queen Birthday Honours, becoming the Lord Browne of Madingley.
