Sloan Master's Program

Activities

In addition to a busy academic schedule, your year at Stanford Business School will give you an exceptional opportunity to explore new ideas, get to know classmates from very different industries or functional backgrounds, and be a part of one of the most exciting academic communities in the world.

Each Sloan class elects officers who help organize activities to meet the group's needs. Fellows host informal lunches where participants can compare notes and get a clearer understanding of the varieties of organizations, industries, and cultural experiences represented in the class. International Fellows host social programs supported by class dues that may include a presentation about a specific country or culture, as well as a sampling of traditional food.

Stanford Business School Activities

As part of the Business School student body Stanford Sloan Fellows participate in a wide variety of GSB activities that make the year memorable. Two regular events are BBLs and TGIFs. BBL is the acronym for "Brown Bag Lunch" and refers to any meeting or class activity held during lunch time. In fall quarter, every Sloan Fellow gives a BBL presentation on his or her company, life, and career. It is a great chance to get to know your classmates.

TGIF, or "Thank God It's Friday," means it is time to relax and party after an intense week. Fellows and their families get together to chat and socialize. A TGIF can be as simple as a barbeque in the park or, more elaborate, a theme activity. The country-specific TGIFs—as Mexicana Fiesta, Japanese Night, and Chinese New Year's Eve—a great chance to learn about other cultures.

Stanford University Events and Activities

The resources of the University are numerous. Stanford is located in a park-like setting with rolling hills studded with ancient oak trees. The campus features a major golf course, tennis and swimming complexes, and a stadium that has been the site for the Super Bowl and World Cup soccer matches. The museum at Stanford, splendidly renovated and expanded, reopened in 1999 as part of a new visual arts complex, the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts and Rodin Sculpture Garden.

The Surrounding Communities

The Bay Area offers a wide variety of cultural and sporting events. Classes generally are not scheduled on Wednesdays and Sloans manage to organize an extra-curricular activity to tour a NASA facility, or enjoy a day trip to Napa and the wine country. Some Fellows go to San Francisco on a weekend evening to enjoy ethnic food, an international film, or one of the many jazz clubs.
