A Day in the Life of the Sloan Partner
Many Sloan Fellows are accompanied to Stanford by their families who spend the year making new friends, sharing new experiences, and exploring new ideas. Each year the current class of Sloan Partners helps the incoming class get settled and passes on suggestions, such as learning to use the campus shuttle service or organizing Sloan Partner Interest groups.
A typical day for Sloan Partners might look like the following:
6:30 a.m. |
Rise and shine! Katy, Emily, Amna, Tomoko, Mike, and Blanca make lunches and feed kids. Sally goes back to bed. |
7:30 a.m. |
Our Sloans run out the door, toast between their teeth, trying to make it to their 8:00 a.m. class. Gauri checks her email from India and Australia. |
7:45 a.m. |
Katy, Emily, Amna, Tomoko, Mike, and Blanca drop kids at school. Betsy, Celina, and Katy go to work. Sally makes coffee. |
9:00 a.m. |
Tomoko, Chacha, Emily, Mike, Ann, and Tim meet for tennis. Eloise takes the twins to the doctor for 6-month checkup. |
10:00 a.m. |
Sally meets her trainer for a workout. Katy drives from San Jose to a business meeting in San Mateo, only slightly over the speed limit. |
11:00 a.m. |
Ten Partners meet at Gauri's to plan the next TGIF. Ana gets another parking ticket. |
12:00 Noon |
We all surprise Amna at Fresh Choice for her birthday. |
1:00 p.m. |
Marianne goes to Spanish class. Mike and Jim play golf at Stanford course. Best scores ever; Tiger is jealous. |
2:00 p.m. |
Sylvia and Chacha go to English class. Monica shops 'till she drops. |
3:00 p.m. |
Gauri teaches a class on Indian dance. Lina tries to dance Indian style, but it comes out looking Moroccan style. Katy, Emily, Amna, Tomoko, Mike, and Blanca pick up kids from school, then prepare after-school snacks and help with homework. |
4:00 p.m. |
Sylvia leads arts and crafts class for Sloan kids. Gauri picks up Diya from preschool. It may be Amna's birthday, but she still has to stop for groceries; no food in the house and Afzaal is hungry. |
5:00 p.m. |
Sally sings at the senior citizen's home in Menlo Park. Partner parents drive their kids to gymnastics, soccer, piano, karate, baseball, and other after-school activities. |
6:00 p.m. |
Partners prepare dinner for their kids and occasionally their Sloans, but usually the Sloans are studying on campus. |
7:00 p.m. |
Mariko gives piano concert for music school. Emily goes to PTA meeting at the elementary school, then rushes home to start the weekly newsletter. |
8:00 p.m. |
Sally, Amna, Gauri, and Mike realize the phone bill is overdue. Write checks immediately, stuff envelopes, and lick stamps. |
9:00 p.m. |
Sally types Karl's finance report. No errors! |
10:00 p.m. |
Emily realizes property taxes are due, postmarked by midnight. Dashes to Kinko's to make copies, then stuffs envelopes, and drives to post office. |
11:00 p.m. |
Several Sloans arrive home from study group. Partners listen intently to the quick recap of the Sloan's day while preparing turkey sandwich for starving Sloan. Sounds like yesterday and the day before that. |
12:00 a.m. |
Partners collapse into bed while Sloans boot up computers for another hour or two. |
