What are the admission criteria?
Business/Management Experience: Applicants are expected to have a prior degree, and should have eight or more years of increasingly successful business experience. Generally five or more years will have been spent with their sponsoring organizations in management positions. Applicants are required to complete the GMAT, and the TOEFL (if their education was not in the English language).
Sponsorship: Most applicants also have financial sponsorship from their organization, including agreement to pay full tuition, full or partial continuation of salary or living expenses, and expenses for books, study trips, and other activities.
If you are not able to obtain financial sponsorship from your organization, you may be able to enter the program as a self-funded candidate. Self-funded places are limited and still require recommendations from your organization. If you are are seeking admission on that basis, please advise us at the time of your application.
What is the application deadline?
The application deadline for 2008-2009 academic year is January 8, 2008. The Sloan academic year begins August 8, 2008, and ends July 4, 2009 (after the International Study Trip).
Can I apply online?
Yes. All our applications are submitted online. Click here to apply: electronic application.
What are the costs of the program?
Tuition for the 2007-08 academic year is $89,400; some increase is expected for 2008-09. In addition, living and incidental expenses for Sloan participants and their families may range from $30-70,000 depending on circumstances. Additional budget information is in the Apply section.
Do you offer financial aid?
Financial Aid is available to self-funded Sloan Fellows. To assist in financing the Sloan Program, the GSB provides private educational loan funds to self-funded U.S. and international students and federal educational loans to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. All self-funded Sloan Fellows will be required to contribute a portion of your income and assets to finance the program.
How many applications do you receive?
We have significantly more applications than openings in the Sloan Program. If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact the Sloan office by email at sloanadmin@gsb.stanford.edu or by phone at 650.723.2149.
Who should write a letter of recommendation?
Sloan Fellows must have a written recommendation from the chief executive officer (or a designee) of their sponsoring organization. In addition, two other confidential written recommendations are required. These should be from individuals who have been directly responsible for evaluating your managerial performance and potential.
Do you interview candidates?
Candidates are strongly encouraged to visit a Sloan core class and meet with the director or associate director for an informal interview.
Are non-United States citizens treated any differently in the admissions process?
Citizens of most other countries are required to submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), but the rest of the application process is similar to that for United States citizens. We take into account when essays in English may not be in the candidate's first language. At the same time, we need evidence that you have the language facility to comprehend rapidly spoken English (to ensure maximum benefit from classroom discussions) and have strong English reading skills to keep up with the volume of required course reading.
Do you require the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)?
All applicants must submit results from the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) with their application for admission. Applicants may schedule to take the test at computer testing sites in most countries. As soon as the GMAT is completed, an "unofficial" score will be provided. Applicants must note this score on their application for admission. An official score must also be mailed to the Sloan office by the GMAT service. Information about the GMAT is available online at www.gmat.org or by email at GMAT@ets.org.
Do you require the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)?
If English is not your native language, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Participation in class discussion is required and can significantly affect the Sloan Fellow's ability to succeed in the program. It is essential that each Fellow be fluent in both spoken and written English. TOEFL information and registration are available at online at www.toefl.org or by email at toefl@ets.org.
I don't have unofficial scores for the GMAT and/or TOEFL exams because the computer-based test is not available in my area. What should I do?
If you took the paper-based test, you may leave the scores blank on your application form; however, please write in the month and year you took the exam. You must take the GMAT or TOEFL (for certain international applicants) before you apply for admission.
I am scheduled to take the GMAT or TOEFL right before the application deadline, so I won't have my official scores in time. What should I do?
You may include your unofficial scores on your application form. Official score reports should be sent separately from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Note that your unofficial GMAT scores will not include the AWA (analytical writing score). You may leave the AWA score blank on your application form.
I can't get an official transcript from my university by the deadline. What should I do?
You may submit an unofficial transcript with your application package and request that your school send an official transcript to us as soon as possible.
