John Goldman is a civic volunteer, active in various philanthropic and community organizations. A native San Franciscan, he received a BA from Swarthmore College in 1971 and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1975.
He is the immediate past president of the San Francisco Symphony, where he completed an 11-year tenure in December 2012. He is a past president of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. Mr. Goldman is a former chair of the Stanford Athletic Board and serves on the boards of Stanford’s Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACS), Stanford Health Care and Stanford Live! He also serves on several start-up and established community organizations. In 2014, he was appointed by President Obama as a general trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Mr. Goldman is the former chairman of Willis Insurance Services of California Inc., part of the Willis Group Holdings. Previously, he was CEO of Goldman Insurance Services, which he joined in 1986. He also served in the Office of Legislative Analyst for the State of California from 1975 to 1978, was assistant secretary of transportation for the State of California from 1978 to 1981, and was the owner of a regional chain of children’s clothing stores from 1982 to 1986.
