Russell is an independent strategy and fintech consultant. He formerly worked at Wells Fargo & Co in San Francisco, where he worked across the bank to advance mobile initiatives and artificial intelligence. Previously he was in the Innovation and Strategic Partnerships team at Visa, where he helped negotiate and launch the company’s first mobile payments deals with global telcos Orange (France Telecom) and Vodafone. He also served as Visa’s liaison to the venture and startup communities. Prior to Visa, Russell was at American Express and was a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton.
Russell co-chaired his GSB 15th reunion fundraising committee, which raised over $1.5 million. He has been a class agent both before and after that reunion, and was named a Stanford Associate for his volunteer service several years ago. He also serves on another GSB board, for the Alumni Consulting Team, where he has led or volunteered over five pro bono consulting engagements for SF Bay Area nonprofits.
Russell graduated from Harvey Mudd College in Los Angeles in 1994 and received an MS in environmental engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1995. He and his wife, Susie Cranston, who is also a GSB alum (MBA ’04), have two sons and live in San Francisco. Their sons are in first and second grade. When not involved with his sons or their schools, Russell enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, and flying as a private pilot.
