Walnut Creek Aquatic Foundation
The Walnut Creek Aquatic Foundation (WCAF) was established to help conceive, fund, and sustain aquatic facilities that will allow recreational, learn-to-swim, competitive, fitness and therapeutic aquatic programs to exist and thrive in Walnut Creek and surrounding communities. With over 350,000 uses annually (pre-pandemic), the Swim Center is a vital resource for the community in providing affordable, healthy recreation for individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds. The Swim Center has served the community for a half century with continuous and active year-round use. By now, multiple generations of community members have enjoyed the Swim Center.
What is the best strategy to generate community support for a community aquatic program?
Walnut Creek has consistently been a strong supporter of aquatic activities ranging from fitness programs for young and old all the way up to a well-respected synchronized swimming team. The aquatic facilities have deteriorated over the years, and the city recognizes the need for a major facilities overhaul. As popular as it is, this aquatic program competes with many other demands for funding and the city is looking to the WCAF to fund a portion of the cost of renovating or replacing the aquatic facilities.
The WCAF is looking for an additional volunteer or two (ACT volunteer Jim King, MBA ’77 and Walnut Creek Aquatic Foundation board member, will lead this team) to help develop a strategy to generate community support for renovation/replacement of the city’s aquatic facilities. Included will be 1. interviews of constituents (user groups, civic leaders, staff, and elected officials) to determine support for the project and 2. assessment of the capacity of various stakeholders for raising funds to meet expectations of the city council.
