Teaching Statement

Jonathan Dotan teaches GSBGEN 578, “Is the Internet Broken?”, with Professor Anat Admati at the Graduate School of Business. He is also a fellow at Stanford’s Center for Blockchain Research and the Stanford Compression Forum, where he is working on applied strategy and policy for distributed ledger technologies in media and communications. His research examines technology governance frameworks and the new prospects for a more decentralized Internet. Jonathan’s teaching focuses on the never simple relationship between innovation and progress.

Jonathan brings to Stanford 20 years of experience that weave together his passions for technology, media and policy. Alongside his teaching, Jonathan is currently prepping the next season of HBO’s Emmy Award-winning series, SILICON VALLEY, on which he’s worked for six seasons as a writer/producer and led a team of experts to track the surreal world of technology.

Most recently, Jonathan was Chief Strategy Officer of the holographic media pioneer, OTOY. There he worked with the founders to launch the company’s cloud rendering service, the RNDR blockchain and a slate of award-winning AR/VR productions. Jonathan has co-founded and mentored numerous startups over the years and continues to advise on early-stage growth. He also sat on the other side of the table as a strategic investor, while serving as President of Media and Digital Strategy for the private equity arm of the Indian retail conglomerate, Future Group, in Mumbai. Before that he worked in over 30 countries for the Motion Picture Association of America as a liaison to local film industries and governments, with an emphasis on Asian markets’ adoption of digital media.

Jonathan’s career began in the motion picture talent department of ICM, after a post with the United Nations in Bosnia and Hercegovina.
