Writing Coaches
The Dean’s Office at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, is seeking qualified writing coaches for multiple sections of an MBA course on practical writing starting September 1, 2026. The coaches will be hired as contractors and the role is not benefits-eligible.
The course teaches techniques to write better, and students practice these techniques in weekly assignments, including emails, cold-call outreaches, business pitches, LinkedIn profiles, stories and speeches, feedback to colleagues, responses to difficult questions, and opinion pieces. Writing coaches provide editing and written feedback on those assignments, which range from 100 to 1000 words, in partnership with the course instructor.
The coaches can expect to spend 15 to 30 minutes per student per week. For 20 students, that will probably average out to 5 to 10 hours per week over the full-quarter(10-week) autumn and spring sessions, and 10 to 20 hours per week over the half-quarter (5-week) winter sessions.
Standard turnaround is 24-48 hours after student submission, so the course instructor can review coach feedback before it is released to students.
Coaches can do this work remotely, but they are encouraged to attend or Zoom into the classes.
Compensation is $60 per hour. We’ll ask you to track your hours and submit an invoice.
Applicants should submit their applications via email to gsb_academicaffairsadmin@stanford.edu as soon as possible and no later than July 15, 2026. Applicants will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until positions are filled. For an application to be considered complete and to be reviewed, the applicant must submit:
- CV
- Cover letter with information about editorial and writing skills
- One reference who can speak to the applicants’ qualifications for this position. References will not be contacted until the interview stage of the process.
Any questions regarding the application process should be sent by email to gsb_academicaffairsadmin@stanford.edu.
