Workshops

Workshops and seminars are offered to students throughout the academic year. Below is a list of some of the sessions on the schedule year.

CAT Writing Program Seminar Series

This series explores the four primary components to developing leadership communication that is reliably read, understood, and remembered.

  • Design Your Message explores message design strategies that can reliably produce clear leadership communications.
  • Engage Your Audience explores language and style choices to make leadership communications memorable.
  • Refine Your Message considers usage (mechanics and grammar) that will allow the message to shine.
  • Defend Your Message provides the fundamentals of oral communication applied specifically to responding to direct challenges from professor and peers.
Maximizing Classroom Participation

Participants develop the skills and strategies required to more actively engage in classroom and business discussions. They learn tactics for getting involved quickly, and look critically at the characteristics of an effective discussion.

3-Ds of Presentation Success

Flexible, compact and practical; this three-part workshop series is designed to help students hone their oral communication skills early in their GSB career. The series is organized into three modules:

  • Development provides practical tools that can be applied immediately to increase the audience attention, engagement, and recall.
  • Delivery explores the behaviors around effective communication.
  • Display focuses on the use of supporting media and technology to enhance communication.
The Power of Listening

Of all the communication skills that enable a leader to influence others and to develop strong relationships, listening is by far one of the most powerful.  Yet is also one of the most ignored skills.  This highly interactive workshop will provide the nuts and bolts of how to listen deeply to people and will give students an opportunity to practice, and receive feedback on their listening acumen.

Overcoming Obstacles to Enhance Storytelling

Through kinesthetic learning students develop an acute perception of all aspects of body and voice, and begin to identify habits which are inhibiting communication mastery. Students are guided through specific physical activities to enable a stronger connection to their audience.

Speaking with Authenticity

This workshop helps students determine how "real" they are in a communication context, how well their messages are being conveyed, and helps them further develop this powerful quality.

Improvisation: Teamwork and the Top 5 Rules of the Road

Students are led through a rule of the road crash-course many professional comedians and actors use to keep them working seamlessly together on stage. These simple concepts can be transferred over to business teams to keep them operating within the bounds of constructive collaboration.
