About the Stanford Leadership Institute

The Stanford Leadership Institute prepares leaders to navigate and shape a rapidly changing world. Effective leadership requires not only interpersonal and managerial skills, but also an understanding of the contextual forces transforming business and society.

Based at Stanford Graduate School of Business, the institute is an interdisciplinary hub for innovative research, teaching, and convenings. It brings together expertise from Stanford and beyond to address the critical issues of our time and inspire leaders to make a positive impact in their organizations and the world.

Our Approach

The Stanford Leadership Institute advances a multi-faceted, interdisciplinary model to address the challenges facing today’s leaders. Through research, teaching, convenings, and engagement with distinguished experts, we generate insights and translate them into practical leadership strategies.

By connecting rigorous scholarship with real-world experience, the Institute equips leaders not only to respond to change — but to shape it.

Our Principles

Interdisciplinary

The changes leaders are facing today are multi-dimensional. So we bring together academics, practitioners, and policymakers from disciplines across the GSB, Stanford University, and beyond to help leaders succeed.

Open

To generate productive solutions, it is crucial to create an environment where a wide range of ideas are welcome and disagreements are discussed respectfully. That’s why we seek out and engage with new ideas, especially when they reflect different perspectives and opinions.

Practical

Successful leaders combine good ideas with skillful execution. By developing insights from research, we prepare leaders to take informed and effective action.

Impactful

Our ultimate goal is ambitious: to improve how we live, do business, and govern society. To that end, we are committed to preparing principled and purposeful leaders to navigate the complexities of our world so they can make a positive impact.

Our History

The Stanford Leadership Institute builds on a legacy of preparing leaders to understand and shape the complex changes impacting business and society.

It extends the school’s insights on leadership and governance to wider audiences, equipping them to drive progress through principled leadership, bold ideas, and actionable solutions.
