Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to request a fellowship for the 2013 – 2014 academic year to support work on my dissertation which seeks to measure the performance effects of private equity investment on Indian firms. Although a potential catalyst for the development of a productive economy, especially in the high-constraint environment of an emerging market, there has been little research into the effects of private equity investment outside of the US. This project seeks to fill that gap. After a recently completed trip to India which was sponsored by a SEED research grant, I now have a better understanding of the industry as well as some data from Indian private equity firms that I hope to use to shed light on the value these firms are adding to the companies in which they invest. I will spend the next academic year analyzing data from five purchased databases as well as this propriety data. This project will culminate in my dissertation which will seek to detail the importance of this type of capital in India.
