As the first non-European president of the International Skating Union (ISU) in its 132-year-old history, Jae Youl Kim is bringing a fresh perspective to the sport, which includes figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. Elected in 2022 to a four-year term, Jae Youl combines his deep passion for the sport with robust business acumen and proven leadership to elevate skating on the global stage.

Skating and other sports are competing with various forms of digital entertainment for consumer attention, and Jae Youl emphasizes the need to take an innovative, agile approach to winning new and younger generations of fans. During his presidential bid, Jae Youl explained, “Our sport is blessed with many technical professionals and talents. However, the next ISU president must also have proven business experience to ignite skating’s full potential. These two skill sets are complementary, not competitive.”

With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international politics, a Stanford MBA, and his role as president of the Global Strategy Group at Samsung, Jae Youl approaches his presidency with priorities that include investing in athletes’ development and maximizing the marketing potential of competitive skating, while respecting its long-standing traditions.

Under Jae Youl’s leadership, the ISU has launched World Ice Skating Day, held annually in December to celebrate ice skating across the world and increase the sport’s exposure. He also introduced a rebranded Short Track World Tour, adding team nicknames, mascots, and an improved fan experience. Jae Youl has sought input from executives in sports like basketball and mixed martial arts, exemplifying his collaborative approach and his inclination for innovative solutions.
