To keep up with Mexico’s rapidly developing economy and an emphasis on nearshoring, the country’s electricity market needed to change. José Buganza has been instrumental in enacting that change. Returning to Mexico after graduating from the GSB, José worked as Deputy Managing Director of the Ministry of Energy. There, he oversaw the country’s 2014 energy reform, which opened the market to private and foreign investment. Mexico has since renationalized the market, but in José’s current position as CEO of Enegence, he is there to help industrial and commercial clients adapt to the changes.
José founded Enegence in 2017 as a boutique consultancy of experts in the wholesale electricity market offering regulatory and strategic advice. Since then, the company has evolved, creating software and an operational platform to analyze and generate market intelligence. “This added-value service has allowed us to help our clients make their operations safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective,” José told Mexico Business News. Enegence has also added natural gas and sustainability practices to become a one-stop shop for businesses navigating the energy market. The company is currently evaluating around 90 percent of industrial park operations in Mexico, helping them secure funding for electrical infrastructure and aggregating power supply. By optimizing power connections, Enegence can reduce a three-year, high-cost process to a five-month, cost-effective solution.
José’s impact, however, goes beyond the economy. One philanthropic cause close to his heart is El Nido, a sanctuary for animals rescued from illegal trafficking, ecosystem collapse, and abandonment. When El Nido faced an existential crisis three years ago, José mobilized his political, social, and financial capital to help ensure it would have the resources necessary to continue its mission. Today, more than 1,000 animals from 113 species live under El Nido’s care. Alan Chiu, MSx ’11, says, “Beyond José’s impressive contribution to the Mexican economy, what has inspired me even more is his dedication to leaving the world a better place.”
