Raised in Detroit, Stacy Brown-Philpot had little interest in tech; instead she had her sights set on a career in accounting. While working in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, she became “fascinated with startups” that were creating businesses achieving significant value in public markets. “I wanted to understand more about value creation driven by innovation.” So, she headed West to earn an MBA from Stanford GSB. After graduation, she joined Google, led operations across multiple continents, and eventually took the reins as CEO of TaskRabbit. Under her leadership, TaskRabbit expanded to more than 100 markets worldwide and in 2017 was acquired by IKEA.
Throughout her journey, Stacy has been deeply shaped by mentorship — the kind that opens doors, amplifies voices, and raises the expectations one holds for oneself. That belief in lifting others is central to her work. When she stepped down as CEO of TaskRabbit in 2020, she joined SoftBank’s $100 million Opportunity Fund, designed to invest in entrepreneurs who too often face barriers to capital. In 2023, she launched Cherryrock Capital, where she focuses on backing visionary founders building companies with lasting impact.“Stacy Brown-Philpot is an amazing leader and accomplished technology executive who has paved the way for a new generation of executives in the business world,” says David Yoon, MBA ’00.
Stacy’s influence extends well beyond her own ventures. Stacy serves on the boards of HP Inc., Nordstrom, and Noom, and recently joined the Stanford University Board of Trustees. She has also served on the GSB Alumni Association Board of Directors and the GSB Dean’s Advisory Council.
“We’re on a mission to change the face of wealth creation and build an enduring institution,” Stacy says. Her career reflects that mission — breaking barriers, creating opportunity, and inspiring others to lead with purpose.
