Supporting Our Asian American Community: March 19, 2021

Dear All,

I am reaching out to you in the wake of the shooting of eight people — including six Asian American women — in Atlanta this week. Sadly, these are the latest incidents that have left Asian Americans across the country feeling vulnerable and at-risk.

I have heard from and spoken to students, staff, and faculty about what they are feeling — anxiety, anger, and sadness — in light of the racist and xenophobic rhetoric and actions against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. While anti-Asian rhetoric and violence have escalated since the beginning of the pandemic, these incidents also are a painful reminder of a longer history of discrimination.

I would like to communicate the GSB’s unwavering support for our AAPI community. Many of you may be concerned about your family, friends, and colleagues. I hope you will take the time to reach out to show support; it is especially valued given the distance and isolation still imposed by the pandemic. And I hope you will continue to work with us to build an equitable and inclusive culture at the GSB and beyond.
