Annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Report

We are committed to bringing about positive change.

Sustainable cultural change is possible, yet not always easy. Research shows that diversity training and one-off programs are not enough. Instead, we need a model of change to move us from where we are today to where we want to be in the future.

Introducing Our DEI Report

We are pleased to share our first annual DEI report which demonstrates our progress to date, shows where we need to improve, and provides a roadmap for our long-term efforts. Our ultimate goal is to hold ourselves accountable so that we can develop principled, effective, and inclusive leaders at Stanford GSB and beyond.

Section 1: Identify Challenges and Frame Solutions

Data can help us understand our organizational strengths and opportunities, and help us identify the most important targets for change. It can also play an important role in motivating change by holding ourselves accountable for progress.

We partnered with Stanford University to create the first iteration of the IDEAL dashboard, which shows the composition of the Stanford community from 2010 to the present. The data will be updated every year at the end of fall quarter. By using filters, you can see the Stanford GSB results.

Section 2: Build Strategic Pilots

We identified many areas where we could learn more about the challenges and issues facing our community on the road toward achieving our diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. Going forward, we have two focus areas:

  • Increase the diversity of our community, for instance, through projects in the Research Fellows program that focus on underrepresented minorities and women, and bringing more women speakers to guest lecture in our classrooms.
  • Create a more inclusive campus, such as incorporating diversity in MBA & MSx curriculum and redefining language in business case studies.

In each area, we launched a number of pilot initiatives to test our theory of change and to motivate positive momentum in key areas that we identified as important to our overall goals.

Section 3: Share With Networks to Bring Good Ideas Into the World

As we continue to progress and build momentum for DEI within Stanford GSB, we have the opportunity to leverage our incredible network of alumni and past program participants to enable further sharing of ideas to effect broader change on a global scale.

Three innovative initiatives or programs stand out that are helping us amplify our impact:

Section 4: Advance Our Work

We have five primary focus areas for 2020:

  • Increase the diversity of our Stanford GSB community
  • Create an inclusive classroom and learning experience
  • Create an inclusive and welcoming campus community
  • Empower and support communities underrepresented in our efforts to date
  • Support new research efforts

We are taking steps to move forward and we anticipate that next year will be even more important and challenging than the prior years. We look forward to reporting back on our progress each coming year.

Do Your Part

Everyone can participate and help build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world. We invite you to support one change effort at Stanford GSB, or inspire change in your own organization or community.

Together, we will build our movement, one step at a time. We are open to your ideas to help us get there.
