CIENA Corporation designs, manufactures and markets intelligent optical networking systems and software, for service providers and enterprises worldwide. The company grew rapidly as the market for telecommunications equipment exploded with the Internet boom in the mid and late 1990s. The case examines CIENA’s strategies for dealing with the difficult environment for telecommunications equipment suppliers in 2002 and beyond.
